The Never Ending Story


Well, this is it, time to go home, we leave soon (and with the time warp, should get home tomorrow - floods in Thailand pending) and will be back in the loop from Wednesday. But before we go, we need to say a massive thank you to all the wonderful people who have made our trip down under so amazing: Marian and Ruth for all their hard work making Impact 7 such a great gig at Monash, Tommaso and Mariella for a wonderful feast and welcome to Melbourne, Robert, Suzie and Des for the welcome at State Library Victoria, Gracia and Louise, David, Angela, Scott, Willis and family, Sara, Monica, Peter and everyone in Melbourne who made it so great to be there; Tim, Mal, Jonathan, Alan, and all the students at QCA in Brisbane, for good times, talking and help all round, and especially Tim for looking after us so well and inviting us to be here in Brisbane to work with him. Helen for dinner and the wonderful tour of State Library Queensland, and Jo Diball, Gallery Director of POP for being ace, and making our work there so entertaining.

Our rules of engagement in Australia: look up, down and either side, don’t sit on any benches, sidewalks, pavement edges, wooden benches, grass, don't stand still too long, stand near water, under a tree, keep still outside or inside, don’t lean against anything, or get in the car without checking for a massive spider, don’t feed the wildlife, do talk to strangers, they have great stories to tell, and buy you drinks.

We will miss, all the amazing people we have met, and we will stay in touch; the octopus sushi in the QCA café, the knee breaking, gravity defying rides at Luna Park, Melbourne, our lovely balcony at QCA with views of the city, and the massive bats that swoop past each evening, races in the lifts to get to the 7th floor first, papermaking with Tim, POP Gallery, Tim and Mal (of course, for everything) peace and quiet, friendly strangers who love bio-engineering, lovely Thai food, Gordon the gecko who lives in our apartment (he is probably still there waiting for the next guest to arrive).  We won’t miss: mosquitoes, scarily large Huntsman spiders, goannas, jumping spiders, strange animals and insects, being bitten by anything, and nightly birdcalls that sound like someone being murdered.

We hope to come back and do more in the future, and then if we blog again, we can call it Return to Oz, but in the meantime, we are really grateful to everyone for making it such a brilliant trip, and thanks for following our blog too. We’ll update our websites when we get back with proper info and images.

Riders on The Storm


This morning, covered in mosquito bites from papering the car park last night, we peeled the dry paper off the underground car park ceiling and walls, and have divided it up for the participants to take away and make into books.

What do you get as payback for your patience when scraping, filling and painting the gallery walls twice to make sure they are super clean for the next artists?  The perfect storm of course! After being disappointed last weekend when a storm seemed to materialise and pass away before it got to do anything great, we got the best Armageddon type storm this afternoon when were putting POP gallery back to rights. Completely unpredictable Australian weather we love it!  And the gallery cleaned up very nicely too.

Going Underground (car parking)

We had another busy day today. After our opening/closing party last night, Helen Cole kindly invited us all back to her house where her husband had cooked up a Spanish feast of tapas and paella, where we had a lovely evening with them, Noreen Grahame of Grahame Galleries + Editions, and the artist Normana Wight.

This morning, Sarah met with Helen again at State Library Queensland where she had a tour of the amazing building, and Helen chose some of her favourite artists’ books to study for the morning, whilst Paul met with second and third year printmaking students at QCA to talk about digital printmaking.

This afternoon, we decamped to the underneath of Tim’s house to make sheets of black paper, in which we floated all the leftover letters and ghost scraps from the gallery walls that we had swept up last night. We then pressed the paper, and later this evening, we visited the underground car park and attached them to the walls and ceilings to let them dry against the concrete and pick up any texture from the lines and holes (we are not sure if this is a normal way to spend a Friday night but it worked well). Tomorrow morning we will retrieve them and take them back to POP gallery for the final clear up and share out, as we will all take some home to make into books to return to Tim as a complete set.

How to Make Friends and Influence People (or, the Writing is off the Wall)



Tonight we launched our exhibition/ happening at POP gallery. Tim gave a speech and invited visitors to choose a weapon and start scraping the gallery walls. This could have been a bit confusing as everyone who came in thought there was nothing on the walls. We had spent a few days before covering the letters in white spray and then white paint, so that when you walked in it looked like there was absolutely nothing on the walls.  

Our video of the process was playing to explain our procedure for the last 8 days, so people could see how we had arrived at nothing. Once all the walls had been scraped off, we swept up the abandoned letters, and tomorrow afternoon we will float all the ghostly scraps in water so that they sink into the paper sheets that we will then dry and use to make books from.

The Pitch: A Show About Nothing


Just as George advised Jerry Seinfeld, a good show can be about nothing.

Our show isn’t actually about nothing, but it might look like that until we open tomorrow night. Actually today felt a bit like an episode of Seinfeld, as we sat around making notes and talking about what we had done and how we felt it had gone, with extra cast members popping in. A whole day spent thinking and writing about nothing.

It was really good fun, and probably our last chance to really talk about our plans at leisure as Tim is teaching tomorrow and we are packing books and then going back to the gallery before the event kicks off at 6pm. And after that, we will be busy again on Friday and Saturday, making something out of nothing.

Black in Back


Today we painted the gallery walls white again, ready for our opening (or project closing party) launch on Thursday evening. We still have tomorrow and Thursday to get our video together, but in the meantime enjoyed some local shopping thanks to Jo, the POP gallery manager, and later finally found a bar where we could afford to eat and drink without taking out a second mortgage each. As for what we show in the gallery on Thursday, well you will just have to wait and see!

Ghost World


We started spraying over some of the texts with white paint today, to make them slowly disappear bit by bit before we do the final ghost work on Thursday.

As we had to wait for the spray paint to dry, Tim gave us the afternoon off, although we were thwarted at every turn. We walked along the riverbank to visit GoMA, Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art (above), but when we got inside, all of the exhibitions were closed for changeover. After a mooch around the (well stocked but very expensive) bookshop we walked back around to the fake sand and water at Streets Beach in the park which would have been great for a swim to cool down but was closed for a corporate volleyball function. So, back to work then!

Firestarter


Today Tim and Mal drove us up to a lookout in the D'Aguilar National Park with extensive views over the mountains and valley out towards the sea at Moreton Bay.  The lookout has built in barbecues, so all you have to do to get cooking is collect fallen wood and light it underneath.

Of course Tim and Mal had brought lots of lovely food and drink, with Barramundi, steaks, salad, fresh pineapple from down the road, and Mal’s homemade caramel pie, all on a picnic table with a proper tablecloth; pretty good for a casual Sunday barbie!

Tim cooked in between encouraging the birds to sing by impersonating bird calls, so we now think of him as the Bird Whisperer. And of course the aromas of all that lovely food cooking, especially the monster prawns you can see here, from Moreton bay brought a few extra visitors to the picnic table including this persistent Goanna who wouldn’t take no for an answer and kept coming back from every angle.

The (im)Perfect Storm


It’s Saturday in Brisbane, and it’s raining! So after not doing much at all this morning, we cleared out everything from the White Space project room here at QCA this afternoon, as we will focus on the POP gallery space from Monday.

We removed all our work materials from POP yesterday before the weekend, and have left the black and white pulp-printed texts up on the gallery wall for any visitors to read and / or leave us instructions for Monday.

We got excited early evening as what looked like a big electrical storm started over the hill but it petered out after an hour and now the sky is clear again. Which is good news for us really, as we are off to see nature tomorrow; Tim and Mal are taking us out to cook a barbecue in the bush, and we have mosquito repellent ready and waiting.

Kraftwerk


More pulp printing in white today after meeting with the 2nd and 3rd years this morning to talk about artists’ books and show them examples from the two exhibitions of books that we still have with us from the Impact conference in Melbourne.

The text is slowly being obliterated from black back to white, it is going to take us a while. This image is of the quote that Tom sent us from Marc Augé’s book Non-places: Introduction to an anthropology of supermodernity. Paul spent hours stencilling it on to the bottom of the gallery wall.

Tonight there is an exhibition opening on campus so we will go and check that out in a minute.

POP Life

Today we made the stencils and exposed the screens, hardening the emulsion Australian style in the sun outside. We met with the third year printmaking students this morning (who are four weeks away from final assessment) to talk about our work and the project with Tim, and have a general chat. After class we moved back to POP gallery with our white pulp and the screens to start printing overlays of text onto the black text from yesterday and straight on the walls. Our plan is to keep building the layers up over the next few days. Some of the students came over to see what we were up to and joined in printing words on the walls.

In The City there's a thousand things (the signs) want to say to you


Today we really got to work at POP gallery. We took the pulp formed letters one by one and made a series of instructions from signs observed around the city and cities. Our first plan was to form a line of text across the gallery wall and then build upon it.  We have taken the (striated) instructions from signs which appear in a clear formal font, and have made them deliberately punk-craft looking, (smooth) to remove their authority.

We are documenting the text as it emerges as we may remove everything again before the actual launch event and just have a blank space with a loop of the documentary process. Tonight Tim is pulping some white paper so we can start printing white instructional overlays after we meet with the 3rd year printmaking students tomorrow.

I Want to Be A Machine (in Andy Warhol’s Factory)

Today we went for the super low-tech idea of making our first batch of letters with a plastic alphabet stencil set. Sometimes the simplest things can turn out to be the most efficient. We want to make hundreds of them so decided to work in a factory production line of pulp, dip, soak and transfer to the felts to make a big pile. Tonight we are going to press them and then deliver them to POP gallery so we can start work on the first part of our urban jungle texts in the morning. We also each did a talk about our research and practice at CFPR for the post-graduate and research students at lunchtime today, which was good to do as we can start to get to know a few more people here.

Pulp Fiction



We started work on the concrete jungle collaboration at QCA today in the white room space where we will work for a week before we move over to the POP gallery next week to work, and then produce an installation. We have settled on the concrete poetry / instructional text (striated space) and resistance (smooth space) so we will be working mostly with texts, whether found, invented or quotes, and will leave only a small trace as the exhibition. We will see what happens…

To Make Meringue You Must Beat The Egg Whites Until They Look Like This


Today we were going to put up a photo of the amazing views over Brisbane from the Mount Coot-Tha lookout that our very kind hosts Tim and Mal Mosely took us to, with views for miles over the city and suburbs, and a walk through the bushland. But then they drove us out to their beautiful wooden Queenslander home later in the afternoon, and cooked us dinner and Mal made this Pavlova, so we all scoffed it and this is how great it looked, and a bit like a mountain.

A Room With a View (or two)

We are now in hot and sunny Brisbane for the next two weeks, having travelled here last night with Tim Mosely. We are spending the next 14 days as resident guests at Queensland College of Art, working with Tim on his Codex Event 8, a collaboration of the urban jungle/concrete poetry and pulp printing. Having settled in to our 7th floor apartment in the art college (we think we can officially say it is the penthouse as it is on the top floor) which has amazing views over the river to the city centre, we will be starting work on the project together Monday, having had a bit of time to think about what we are going to do. We are well situated for culture, the college is part of a long cultural quarter trail alongside the river which also houses the city’s art galleries and the State Library of Queensland so we will have plenty to look at.

Should I Stay or Should I Go

We survived the rain last night and nothing burnt down as the (potential indoor) barbecue swiftly transformed into an elegant evening of wine, lovely canapés and snacks instead. And now, just as we have settled in to life in Melbourne, the party's over. We pack up the exhibitions this afternoon and head off with Tim to Queensland College of Art in Brisbane which we are really looking forward to. So, it is time to say goodbye, to the lovely Gracia & Louise who we just saw again at the Impact zine fair, and to all the wonderful people we have met here at the conference. Congratulations Impact at Monash, we have had a ball! And yes, that is Paul wearing a t-shirt with The Clash on it, on a giant robot.

Burning Down The House



We both assumed different identities today, this morning, Sarah was Tom again to present his paper Drawing with Fire: the art of laser cutting for book art and paper which gave an overview of his AHRC funded project Paper Models. Paul was Deborah Southerland this afternoon, presenting her poster on Edible 3D printing.

Once we had finished we were able to go to Teal Triggs keynote speech: Ripped & Torn, but never thrown away: The legitimisation of the ephemeral graphic object. This included a case study of the British punk fanzine Ripped & Torn produced by Tony Drayton in print form (1977- 1979) and his online website Kill Your Pet Puppy (2007 – present).

Other good things today: Scott Lyon's fleurons, an exhibition of ornamental type casts and photography at MAILBOX 141, at 141 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, which is on until 28th October. And The Sticky Institute in Campbell Arcade, Melbourne, home to zine culture, with lots of lovely zines in stock, and badge and zine making on site.

Um, and soon we will be at the Impact Barbecue party, which as it is still raining, will be inside (!).

Purple Rain


Sarah gave a joint paper for herself and Tom Sowden this morning, A Manifesto for the Book, and also stood in as Tom to deliver his Follow-Ed (after Hokusai) paper this afternoon. In a minute we are off to the opening of the exhibition The Silent Scream: Political and Social Comment in Books by Artists, curated by Monica Oppen and Peter Lyssiotis at Monash University Rare Books library on the Clayton Campus. The exhibition is on display there until November, and has a fantastic catalogue to accompany it. Although we are now caught in the middle of a huge storm, with torrential rain, thunder and multi-coloured lightning (which is rather nice).

Print is Dead (or Alive)


Impact kicked off at 8.30am today, with registration and then a great series of talks and panels. Paul joined JP Willis, Brian Gilkes, Melissa Olen and Steve Hoskins for the first printmedia panel, where he presented his paper Print is Dead (featuring the Human Printer). Sarah was next door with the artists’ books panel, with her Life, the Universe and Everything paper. We had a great first day, and are already looking forward to starting again tomorrow.

She got 99 slides but the bitch ain't in one





In keeping with our decision to use book, song or film titles for blog headers, Sarah thanks Paul for the interesting title for the entry on her Books of All Stripes talk at State Library Victoria, which she thinks references the fact that she talked about other artists’ books rather than her own. We had a great afternoon beforehand, with Robert Heather and Des Cowley, having a tour of the library collection, including the Mirror of the World book exhibition, Ned Kelly’s armour and a peek behind the scenes with Des, who showed us some of the artists’ books purchased for their rare books collection.

Before Sarah’s talk, we got to hang out in the library’s green room, with food and drink, and after the talk we met with local artists and librarians for a drink, including David Dellafiora of Field Study and the lovely Gracia Haby and Louise Jennison amongst others. Thanks to all the SLV staff for hosting us and organising the visit and talk, and to everyone who came along to Sarah's talk.

Interview with the Vampire

Sarah has just been to meet with Matthew van Hasselt (not van Helsing, sorry Matt), Media relations coordinator at State Library of Victoria where she did a radio interview about artists’ books with the lovely Michael Shirrefs for ABC Radio National’s Artworks programme, which will be broadcast on Sunday. We are back there again this afternoon to see the collection and Ned Kelly’s armour.

La Grande Bouffe

At 12.30 today Des and Susan kindly picked us up from Monash to take us out to Warrandyte, in the beautiful countryside outside Melbourne, at the invitation of the artist Tommaso Durante and his wonderful wife Mariella. Tommaso emailed in February to invite us to his home whilst we are visiting Melbourne for Impact, and offered to cook us an Italian feast.

And what an amazing feast it was! Over five hours we ate oysters from Tasmania with Sicilian Santagostino wine, smoked salmon from Tasmania, anchovies from Sicily, salt cod soup “Audrey” with Norwegian salt cod, Harmonium Nero D'avola from Sicily, pasta with aubergines, tomato sauce and mozzarella, giant prawns from Queensland with tomato and chilli, artichokes baked in olive oil, Pecorino cheese from Sicily, then the finest Italian cake with organic lemons and rum, with custard sauce and preserved lemons. We had an amazing time in wonderful company with the Durantes, Des, Susan and Robert. Grazie mille Tommaso and Mariella for a wonderful afternoon!

Impact 7 set up - For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)

We spent a lovely morning hanging with the impeccably organised Impact 7 crew at Monash, installing the two exhibitions of artists’ books we had brought over with us: Life, the Universe and Everything and Follow-Ed. We are looking forward to the start of the Impact 7 gig on Tuesday!

From Dusk till Dawn (or thereabouts)

Melbourne is good city to just wander the streets and see what happens. We loved the exhibition at RMIT University Gallery. Space Invaders, a travelling show of street art from graffiti and posters to zines and stickers. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take photos but you can see some of the works online on the National Gallery of Australia website.

Later in the afternoon we made our way to St Kilda's Park to the famous Luna Park funfair (above), for at least 3 goes on the 99 year old roller coaster amongst other things.

Planes, trains, insects and automobiles

We finally arrived in Melbourne this morning after two days, four airports and three flights. The image here is of the tropical rainforest that has been installed in the middle of Kuala Lumpur airport where we had a 6.5 hour stopover. Apparently mosquitos can live just as well inside these fake airport rainforests, who'd have though eh? I am sure the 5 bites so far are just the beginning of many. Paul wins the prize for seeing the largest cockroach inside the airport though.

Melbourne beckons so we are off to explore…

Impact 7 Multi-disciplinary Printmaking Conference



Organised by Monash University, the IMPACT conference is a biennial international multi-disciplinary printmaking conference, originating from the Centre for Fine Print, University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. Previously it has been held in Finland, Germany and Poland, Estonia, South Africa, UK, and now, Australia.


IMPACT 7 will focus on the multiple identity of the print, exploring the cross-disciplinary nature of printmedia internationally and in the context of the Asia-Pacific region. The conference addresses practitioners, writers, critics, artists, theorists, and others working in the broad fields of print-related research. It aims to provide a platform in which practitioners and researchers can engage in a mutually productive exchange.


IMPACT 7 will reflect on the activities of an international community of artists, writers and designers. The conference will bring indigenous, migrant, and regional voices to the fore, with a focus on cultural diversity, creative collaboration, the artist’s book, and communication in digital networks.

Sarah Bodman and Paul Laidler will be travelling to Australia late September to present papers and show exhibitions for the Impact 7 Multi-disciplinary Printmaking Conference, Monash University, Melbourne.
IMPACT 7: Intersections & Counterpoints will focus on the multiple identity of the print, exploring the cross-disciplinary nature of printmedia internationally and in the context of the Asia-Pacific region.
After the conference, Paul and Sarah will be travelling onwards to spend two weeks at Queensland College of Art in Brisbane for an artists’ residency with Master Pulp Printer Tim Mosely. We will be working with Tim and Melissa Harvey on the codex event 8, from 1st – 15th Oct 2011. This is a collaboration between all four of us as Australian and UK printmakers and papermakers making artists’ books.

We will be uploading images and info as we go along, from 23rd September, to share the events and work produced
